Welcome to The Dower House

We are now taking bookings for 2023, for more information please see our ‘Availability and Rates’ page or email hello@holidayhomesislay.co.uk

Built in the 1870s, The Dower House is located on the Kildalton estate, six miles from Port Ellen. Set on the edge of the sea and surrounded by mystical ancient woodland, overlooked by Cnoc Rhoanastil (the Fairy Hill), where legend has it the queen of the fairies lives. Red, Fallow and Roe deer, common seals, numerous birds and occasional otters and eagles can be seen throughout the year. The Dower House offers peace, warmth and inspiration as well as outstanding sea views across the skerries to Kintyre and the Isle of Arran. Behind the house there is a wild, communal garden leading down to a sheltered natural, sandy beach with an ever changing burn. Ideal for canoeing, snorkelling and swimming, for the more hardy.

Islay has something for everyone, whether it’s the wildlife, golf, history or the unstoppable beauty of the hills and varying coastline. For whisky lovers it is just a short, scenic walk to Ardbeg distillery, and on to Lagavulin, then Laphroaig, down the three distilleries pathway. Or an easy walk following the road north to visit the famous Kildalton Cross.

We are disabled friendly and welcome wheelchair users.

Sorry No Dogs.

We have ample off road parking in front of the house along with a large flat paved terrace with pathway and ramps circling the house.
